In the winter of 1724, while on an outing at sea, Peter the Great of Russia caught sight of a foundering ship, jumped in the water, and helped in the rescue. He caught cold, suffered from high fever, and died several weeks later.

Centuries ago, it was also believed that those who wore diamonds were protected from harm. Diamonds were considered lucky charms for the wearer, counteracting the effects of unfortunate astrological events and endowing him or her with charm and the ability to attract others. Plato wrote about diamonds as living beings, embodying celestial spirits.
